How to Sell Personal Property Online

Most people accumulate quite a few personal items that they buy, receive from others, or build or make themselves. Over time, these items become outdated, unneeded, or their owner simply gets bored of them or needs to free the space that they occupy in their home. What better way to get rid of unwanted personal belongings than to sell them to someone who might use them again? This way, the owner gets rid of their item, makes a small profit, and gives someone else the chance to get new use out of something that might otherwise be thrown away. Let’s look at one of the easiest and most effective ways to sell personal items: online.
In order to sell something online, first make sure that the item is still usable. The object should be in working condition if it is expected to be sold to someone to use again. It should also have an acceptable appearance in terms of wear. If the item to sell appears unclean, take the time to clean it and get it back to its newest appearance possible. Any small defects should be noted. At this point, start thinking about what the asking price would be for the object. The price should be fair and competitive when compared to other similar items online.
Once the object for sale has been brought to its best condition possible, take some photos of it. To do so, find an area with sufficient light so that the photos are well lit and every detail of the object for sale can be seen. If such an area is not available, use the camera’s flash. If the item is small enough, place it on a clean, even surface of contrasting color (i.e. if the item is dark, the surface should be light) such as a sheet, or blanket. If the object is large, like a lawn mower, or a piece of furniture, just make sure that the area where the photos are taken is clean, and clear of any distractions and clutter. The object for sale should be the star of this photo shoot. Take pictures from every relevant angle. Use common sense in deciding what details of the object should be shown clearly to potential buyers. It is important to disclose of any imperfections of the item in the photos. If a surface is more than slightly worn, or discolored, or shows a damaged part, take a clear image of it. It’s best to be honest in displaying the item. Take as many pictures as necessary to communicate its main functions and appearance.
Once the photos have been taken, upload them to a computer. Select the best and most relevant ones by placing them in a separate folder. Any touch-ups can be made at this point using a photo editing software if desired.
There are several websites that allow people to post their items for sale to the public. Two of the most prominent ones are craiglist.org, ebay.com. Some social networking sites also include an online marketplace, such as Facebook Marketplace. Look into which website would suit you best and select one, or several, for selling your item. Be aware that some sites also charge a fee for hosting your sale items. Once you have chosen an appropriate site, look at what the site’s requirements are as to how many photos may be uploaded, how long of a description may be included, and for how long the posting can remain visible to the public. Most sites will require that you create a profile before uploading items for sale. Do so if necessary.
Once a profile is set up on a site, begin creating a posting for the item for sale. Start by writing an accurate description, listing any relevant functions, characteristics, and also any defects or imperfections, but try to focus on the positive aspects of the item. Write about any extra accessories that might be included with your object. . A link to a commercial product description may be included if desired. Don’t forget to indicate the asking price clearly and whether this price is firm or negotiable. Indicate clearly any details about shipping or pick-up, and payment methods once the item is sold.
Once the description is written out, upload any images that are to be included in the posting. Some sites have restrictions of image size and number of images that can be uploaded. If more images than are allowed are desired, use a photo sharing site, like flickr.com or photobucket.com, to upload as many photos as needed and then include a link to the online album in the item’s posting.
Last but not least, make sure to review the posting before publishing it to the web. Look for any typos, spelling errors, omissions in the details, and double check the asking price and shipping information. Once everything is as desired, click on the publish button. A message should appear to confirm that the item has been successfully posted. Usually an email is also sent to the seller which includes a link to the live posting of the item.
